  • Postdoc (m/f/d) Computational Material Science
    The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG), in Geesthacht, near Hamburg, and in Teltow, near Berlin, conducts materials and coastal research. For further information please refer to: ‍ HZG is one of the 19 national institutions of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres e.V. (HGF). Around 1,000 employees carry out basic research and development work in close cooperation with national and international research institutions, research-oriented clinics and economic and public institutions. ‍ At the Institute of Biomaterial Science some 100 scientists research multi-functional, polymer-based biomaterials for applications in regenerative medicine. Their implants and active agent delivery systems provide customised properties and functions to restore impaired body functions. ‍ Postdoc (m/f/d) Computational Material Science ‍ Reference code: 50043409_2 – 2020/B 19 Commencement date: as soon as possible for 2 years The place of employment is Teltow (near Berlin). ‍ The Institute of Biomaterial Science in Teltow of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht invites applications for a Postdoc (m/f/d) Computational Material Science with a focus on developing computational models for the description and characterization of macromolecular/polymeric systems. This is initially a 2-years fixed term contract. ‍ Your tasks A primary objective of the position will be the development of multiscale models describing the process-structure-function relationship of stimuli-sensitive, shape-memory polymer actuator materials on different hierarchical and time levels. ‍ Your profile You have a Ph.D. degree and experience in polymer physics, physics, computational science, or related fields. You have experience in the application of classical molecular dynamics with related force fields to study complex macromolecular systems, their deformation behaviour and uptake of small molecules like water and a profound knowledge in statistical, continuum and finite element mechanics all documented by a strong academic record. You have a proven ability in programming in both scripting and compiling code languages and appropriate skills in software engineering using state-of-the-art object-oriented languages. You are eager to collaborate with chemists, material scientists, biologists and engineers in order to create functional materials by design.   • Postdoc Positions on Study of Neurodegenerative Disease
    Two postdoc positions are immediately available in the laboratory of Dr. Xin Qi in the Department of Physiology & Biophysics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, USA. ‍ The lab focuses on mitochondrial pathology in neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s disease, and ALS. We use a combination of in vitro cell culture, in vivo transgenic animal models, and patient-derived neurons to study the mechanisms by which mitochondrial impairment contributes to neurodegeneration. Another research focus of the lab is the development of therapeutics that enhance mitochondrial function, for the treatment of human diseases. We have been using the rationally designed peptide inhibitors of protein-protein interactions and high throughput screening to identify mitochondrial functional enhancers as therapeutic options. The successful applicant will participate in NIH-funded projects on elucidating the molecular basis of mitochondrial damage and metabolic dysregulation in neurodegenerative diseases. The applicants must have a Ph.D. and/or MD degree in neuroscience, molecular biology, cell biology, pharmacology, or related field.
